Senate Democrats threaten to derail Senate business unless Republicans hold Iran war hearings

Iran Hearings
Sens. Tim Kaine, Chris Murphy, Cory Booker, Tammy Baldwin, Tammy Duckworth, and Adam Schiff warned they would force repeated war powers votes and disrupt Senate business unless Republicans schedule public hearings on the Iran war with Defense Secretary Hegseth and Secretary of State Rubio. The senators are demanding testimony on the war's duration, cost, endgame, rules of engagement, and civilian casualties, including an estimated 170 killed when a missile struck a girls' school in southern Iran.

Senate rejects Iran War Powers Resolution

The Senate voted 47-53 to reject a motion to discharge Sen. Tim Kaine’s war powers resolution (S.J.Res. 59) from the Foreign Relations Committee, blocking it from reaching a floor vote. The resolution would have required congressional authorization for further military action against Iran not in self-defense. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was the only Republican to vote yes; Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) was the only Democrat to vote no.

StatementJun 27, 2025Sen. Kaine responds after Senate blocks his Iran War Powers Resolution from a floor vote
After the Senate failed to advance his war powers resolution 47-53, Kaine said: 'The Framers of our Constitution gave Congress the power to declare war because they believed that the decision to send our nation's men and women in uniform into harm's way was too big for any one person.' He called the Trump Administration's Iran strategy 'chaotic' and said he was 'disappointed that many of my colleagues are not willing to stand up and say Congress needs to be part of a decision as important as whether or not the U.S. should send our nation's sons and daughters to fight against Iran.'
