At least 10 Florida public universities signed 287(g) agreements with ICE at Governor Ron DeSantis's direction, authorizing campus police to question, detain, and arrest individuals suspected of immigration violations. The agreements grant campus officers power to interrogate anyone believed to be undocumented and make warrantless arrests in some cases. Legal experts noted such campus-ICE partnerships are unprecedented nationally. The University of Florida confirmed eight students had their visas revoked. Faculty unions condemned the agreements as creating "a climate of fear" and called them a betrayal of Hispanic-serving institutions.

These universities went beyond compliance. They became active collaborators with ICE. Students' lives were upended, including at schools that have large immigrant and Latin student populations. These actions not only harmed students but established a precedent for collaboration by higher education with lawless enforcement agencies.
